How to Enjoy Baseball!

An easy guide to the rules of baseball

  • A one-on-one showdown between the pitcher and batter

At its most basic, baseball is about the batter hitting the ball thrown by the pitcher.
If the ball goes through the strike zone or the batter misses it, it's called a "strike."
In all other cases, it's called a "ball."

  • Balls are advantageous for the batter, whereas strikes are advantageous for the pitcher

If four balls are thrown, the batter can go to the next base, meaning they have won.
If three strikes are thrown, the batter is out and the pitcher wins.
After three outs, the offense and defense switch.

  • The ball is in the air! Is it fair or a foul?

If the ball hit by the batter is within the lines, it's called a "fair" ball.
If it is outside the lines, it's called a "foul" ball.
If it goes into the seating in the fair zone, that's a home run!
The score then goes up, and it's time to cheer!

  • Will they make it on time? Are they out or safe?

If a player catches the ball before it hits the ground, the batter is "out."
If it hits the ground in the fair zone, the batter can run to a base.
If the ball is caught first, the batter is out, but if they reach the base first, they're safe.

  • Run all the bases for a point!

Until there are three outs, the batter and runners gain a point each time they reach home base.
Once a player reaches second base, which offers a better chance to score, a fight song plays, so keep your eyes on them!

Once you're ready, it's time to hit the stadium!
