Municipal comments
Kikonai Town is located on the southernmost tip of Hokkaido, on the Oshima Peninsula, and is a town rich in nature facing the Tsugaru Strait. It is also home to the first Shinkansen station in Hokkaido, and the railway line that has been operating since the days of the former Japanese National Railways still runs today. With the extension to Sapporo City scheduled for 2030, momentum for Shinkansen service in Hokkaido is growing even stronger. Kikonai is also a town with a rich history in Hokkaido, and the "Kanchu Misogi Festival," held every year in mid-January, is a traditional Shinto ritual that has continued since the Edo period. Four young men enter the freezing Tsugaru Strait to purify the sacred object and pray for a bountiful harvest and a good catch of fish. In addition, the town offers beautiful scenery and events throughout the seasons. Please come and visit Kikonai Town!
