Bibai City is located almost in the center of the Ishikari Plain. Once a thriving coal mining town, it is now an agricultural town producing a variety of crops, mainly rice, wheat, and soybeans, as well as asparagus and haskap berries. It is also a transportation hub, with National Route 12, the Hokkaido Expressway, and the JR Hakodate Main Line running through it. The city boasts several tourist attractions, including the Yasuda Kan Sculpture Museum Arte Piazza Bibai, where visitors can enjoy the changing seasons in harmony with sculptures; Tōmei Park, the best cherry blossom viewing spot in the Sorachi region; and Miyajima Marsh, a Ramsar Convention-registered wetland where approximately 60,000 Greater White-fronted Geese, a natural monument, migrate in spring and autumn. In 2019, the Mitsubishi Bibai Coal Mine Headframe and other structures within the Coal Mine Memorial Forest Park were registered as a Japan Heritage site as part of the "Coal, Iron, and Port" heritage, attracting attention for both its history and tourism. There are also many delicious local dishes such as Bibai yakitori and torimeshi, so please come and visit!
